Contractor License in New Jersey

State license

New Jersey has no traditional general contractor license. Instead, anyone in the business of residential home improvement must register annually as a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) with the Division of Consumer Affairs and display an NJHIC number. Recent legislation adds a formal Home Improvement Contractor and Home Elevation Contractor licensing regime layered on top of registration. Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC trades are licensed separately.

How to get licensed in New Jersey

  1. Confirm your work qualifies as home improvement on residential or non-commercial property (repairs, remodeling, roofing, siding, kitchens, baths, driveways, pools, etc.).
  2. Obtain commercial general liability insurance of at least $500,000 per occurrence.
  3. Register your business entity and disclosure information with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
  4. Complete the HIC application through the Division's online registration portal.
  5. Pay the annual registration fee and receive your NJHIC number.
  6. Display the NJHIC number on advertising, contracts, and vehicles, and put any contract over $500 in writing.
  7. Check for any newer licensing requirements phasing in under recent legislation before starting work.
